Abstract

Nd doped Lu2O3 nanocrystalline powders were synthesized by wet chemical processing. The preparation conditions were discused and optimized, and high quality Nd: Lu2O3 powders were synthesized successfully. The powders are uniform and the average size is about 30 nm. Green compacts were formed from as-synthesized Nd3+: Lu2O3 powders by dry-pressing followed by a cold isostatic pressing. The green compact derived from mixed precipitant achieved the highest linear transmittance after being sintered in flowing H2 atmosphere at 1880 ℃ for 8 h. The linear optical transmittance,refractive index and emission cross section σem of the polished transparent samples reaches 75%, 1. 908 and 6.5 × 10-20 cm2 at the wavelength of 1080 nm, respectively.
