Abstract

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are major components of archaeal and bacterial membrane lipids which can be divided into two categories: isoprenoid GDGTs and branched GDGTs. Iisoprenoid GDGTs are mainly derived from marine Crenarchaeota, and the amount of the cyclopentyl moieties of the molecular will increase with the increasing of temperature. Values of the TEX86 index based on the relative distribution of these lipids strongly correlate with sea surface temperature (SST) and lake surface temperature (LST), and it can be applied to estimate long time scale paleoceanography and paleolimnology temperature, especially the warmer period in the past. Branched GDGTs are produced by anaerobic bacteria in soil, and the degree of cyclisation and methylation of these molecular are correlated with soil pH and annual mean air temperature (MAT). The MBT/CBT index based on the relative distribution of branched GDGTs in the coastal sediments can be used to reconstruct the continental temperature changes in the past. The branched and isoprenoid GDGTs index (BIT) has been applied to determine the sources and distribution of terrestrial organic matter in coastal sediments, and the coupling with above proxies canenhance the accuracy of reconstruction results. The GDGTs and their related proxies are becoming the important tools promoting the global climate change studies of ocean and continent.
