Evaluation in Text:Overt and Covert
摘要
Abstract
Evaluation is a central part of the meaning of any text and can be everywhere in discourse. Its realization can be either overt or covert. The former can be expressed by some evaluative lexis while the latter can be signaled via other devices. This paper probes into the nature of evaluative explicitness and concludes that the interpretation of covert evaluation relies on context and shared values. Also the paper investigates factors that affect evaluative explicitness in text. These factors include such aspects as genre, location of evaluation and the familiarity between writer/speaker and reader/listener.关键词
