Effects of aeration rate and MLSS on simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in single reaction system

Abstract

A single reaction membrane bio-reactor(MBR) system with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification(SND) was constructed coupling with the hybrid cultured sludge by nitrification sludge and denitrification bacteria.The effect of aeration rate and mixed liquor suspended solids(MLSS) on the SND was studied.When the range of MLSS was 6.0-10.0 g/L in the single sludge system, the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency by SND reached above 85% on the suitable aeration rate, and the best aeration rate for the maximum TN removal efficiency on different MLSS became bigger with the increasing of MLSS.A smaller response factor F, the less change of TN removal efficiency was caused by aeration rate and the stronger buffeting effect on the oxygen transfer with the increasing of MLSS.Operated in the MLSS of 8.0 g/L, higher TN removal efficiency was easy to be obtained in the low ammonia loading, but the higher aeration rate was needed for a better TN removal efficiency in the high ammonia loading.The range of ammonia loading for a suitable operation was 0-0.30 kg/(m3·d).When MLSS≥3.0 g/L, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in effluent was below 50 mg/L, and the greater part of COD was contributed to denitrification.The system could timely respond to the change of loadings and operate stably.
