Prevalence of antibiotics resistance and OXA carbapenemases genes in imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates in China

Abstract

Objective To analyze the prevalence of antibiotics resistance and the distribution of genes responsible for carbapenems resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates. Methods Ninety seven clinical A. baumannii isolates were cultured, identified, and collected during the period from July 2007 to June 2008. Antibiotics resistance rates of the clinical isolates were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing.Genotypings were determined by pulsed -field gel electrophoresis. The distribution of carbapenemase alleles were investigated by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. Results All isolates were characterized as multidrug - resistant (MDR) strains which were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics. Genotyping by PFGE found seven main PFGE patterns. All of the MDR A. baumannii isolates carried the blaoxa-51 - like allele. The detection rate of the blaoxa-23 - like and blaoxa-58 -like alleles was 80.4% (78/97) and 2. 1% (2/97), respectively. Most of the isolates (78/97, 80. 4% ) carried genes which encode more than one carbapenemase. Conclusion OXA -type carbapenemases play an important role in imipenem resistance of A. baumannii and OXA -23 type carbapenemase is a popular type in China.
