Abstract

Visible/near-infrared spectroscopy(VNIRS) was used as a prominent technique for non-destructive fruit quality evaluation. In this research, the potential of using V NIRS was investigated for measuring total soluble solids (TSS) of Olinda sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L)], and the relationship was established between non-destructive VNIRS measurement and TSS. Intact Olinda sweet orange fruit was measured by reflectance VNIR in 325 to 2500 nm range. The data set as the logarithms of the reflectance reciprocal [absorbance(log 1/R)] was analyzed by partial least square (PLS) regression in order to build the best prediction model for these characteristics, using several spectral pretreatments and multivariate calibration techniques. The best model for TSS prediction with r=0.994 and standard error of prediction (SEP) 0.075 worked well in 1447 to 1777 nm by Multiplicative Scatter Correction(MSC). Results suggested that the VNIRS technique was adaptable to the TSS determination of Olinda sweet orange. This non-destructive, fast and accurate technology could be used in citrus industry that would be beneficial to predict fruit maturity.
