Abstract

Piping is a dangerous situation of levees in flood period. This paper proposes a new method that uses pipe flow theory for the piping channel, and conventional seepage theory for the other region. At their common boundary the two regions share water head and discharge rate with opposite sign. The coupling mechanism of seepage-pipe flows allows this method to simulate the advancing pattern of piping. Critical flow rate is evaluated by the theories of sediment incipient motion for the cases of horizontal and vertical piping channels, and a threshold velocity is used to determine whether piping channel advances in the erosion course.The proposed method is on a better physical ground than traditional finite element method, while it induces little extra computational cost.
