An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm for coverage enhancement in directional sensor networks

Abstract
The coverage optimization of sensor networks is of great importance in such areas as rationally allocating of channel resources of the network, better sensing and gathering information and lengthening of the network viability. In this paper, the directional sensing model of sensor nodes is analyzed and an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm for coverage enhancement in directional sensor networks is proposed. To optimize the network coverage rate, a multi-step position-selectable updating particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced. Targeting at randomly deployed directional sensor networks, the proposed algorithm adjusts the major sensing direction of the sensing nodes, reduces the sensing overlapping regions and coverage holes, and accomplishes coverage enhancement. A set of simulation experiments are performed to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is simple, efficient and superior to the traditional coverage-enhancing algorithms.关键词
