Abstract

Zinc-doped titania nanotubes (Zn-TiO2 nanotubes) were synthesized using hydrothermal treatment-impregnation method,and photos of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that Zn-TiO2 nanotubes were hollow and open-ended, and they were measured to be about 6 to 8 nm in diameter, with about 1 nm wall thickness, and the lengths in the range of 50 to 200 nm. The photocatalytic activities of Zn-TiO2 nanotubes for the degradation of methyl orange were investigated. The results showed that the photocatalytic activities of TiO2 nanotubes enhanced after Zinc-doping, and 0.4% Zn-TiO2 nanotubes exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. The effects of various parameters such as pH and amount of Zn-TiO2 nanotubes on the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange have been studied, and the results showed that methyl orange was proved to be degraded effectively using Zn-TiO2 nanotubes. The CODCr removal efficiencies and color removal efficiencies changed differently during the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange, probably due to the different degradation efficiencies of aryl group and alkyl group.
