Two-dimensional analysis of in-filled trenches as passive barriers in saturated soil

Abstract
A study on the problem of vibration isolation efficiency by in-filled trenches as passive barriers in homogeneous saturated ground is presented.The investigation is accomplished by use of the semi-analytical boundary element method (BEM) in cooperation with the basic solution of the thin layered method (TLM).Consequently, a two-dimensional semi-analytical BEM model is put forward, where the TLM basic solution is employed, to use in-filled trenches as passive barriers taking into account the dynamical interaction of soil-structure.The effect of the model parameters on the effectiveness of vibration isolation by harder in-filled trenches is investigated and discussed.The results show that the in-filled trenches are efricient to isolate the ground vibrations due to the incident Rayleigh wave.Increasing trench depth and shear modulus can result in anincrease in the screening effectiveness, while the Poisson's ratio of trench has less effect on the screening effectiveness.Moreover.the width of the trenches can affect the screening efficiency greatly and in a complex way.关键词
