Effect of Bi on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Hyper-Eutectic Al-1 8%Si Alloy

Abstract
Experiment was carried out to study the effect of different Bi content on microstructure and mechanical properties of hyper-eutectic Al-18% Si alloy. The results show that most of Bi distributed uniformly and dispersively in the Al-18%Si alloy matrix, only a little Bi aggregation was found; and Bi had a certain modification effect on eutectic Si, with the increasing of Bi content,eutectic silicon transformed from bulky needle-like to short stalk shape, and when addition of Bi reached 3%, eutectic silicon uniformly distributes in the matrix as vermicular patch, and when Bi content was 4% and 5%, the eutectic Si was not further refined. In addition, the research on mechanical properties and friction show that the tensile strength increased from 168 MPa to 189 MPa when 3% Bi was added to Al-18%Si alloy, the friction coefficient decreased from 0.437 2 to 0.387 9, and the abrasion loss of alloy is only 20% of that without Bi.关键词
