New MRI anatomical concepts of the conjoined longitudinal muscle

Abstract
Objective:This study was designed to investigate the normal anatomy of the conjoined longitudinal muscle on magnetic resonance images. Methods:The T1-weighted turbo spin-echo MR images of anal region obtained with a body coil in 60 normal volunteers(30 mcn and 30 nulliparous women, aged 19-25 years) in supine pasition. The anal midcoronal image and anal oblique transverse images were used to demonstrate the conjoined longitudinal muscle. Results:The images demonstrated that the mean distance between the internal and external anal sphincter was 3.4 ± 0.8 mm in males, 3.9 ± 0.9 mm in females, and the distance showed no difference with regard to gender. There 3 MRI layers between these two muscles; it was the levator ani muscle and its inner and outer spaces. Conclusions:The levator ani is encapsulated within its inner and outer spaces to cnsure that it is isolated. Therefore, the so-called conjoincd longitudinal muscle is a redundant anatomical concept.关键词
