Abstract

The ballistic limit of a 10 g fragment simulating projectile (FSP) penetrating different thicknesses of ceramic and shipbuilding steel was investigated by ballistic experiments for the purpose of obtaining mechanisms of FSP penetrating targets of ceramic and shipbuilding steel. The way of deformation of ceramic and shipbuilding steel and their thickness changes in relation to ballistic limits were analyzed. The ceramic deformation shows a radical crack of full trans-thickness, ceramic chips ejected to the front, and a crevasse diameter much bigger than FSP's.The shipbuilding steel deformation shows a hunch-dish mode and a hunch diameter much bigger than FSP's around the ballistic limit. An empirical formula between the ballistic limit and the thickness of ceramic and ship-building steel was gained according to the emprical results. The experiential formula can calculate the thickness of ceramic and shipbuilding steel with a certain protective goal. Reasonable structures of light-weight ceramic composites were designed by the empirical formula.
