Abstract

Tall-spindle shaped apple trees with 3, 6, 9, 11 years old were used as experimental materials,parameters such as branch number, tree body structure and yield were measured. The results showed that the stem circumference, canopy diameter, canopy volume and leaf density increased as the increase of tree ages,whereas DIFN decreased with the tree age. Each age group had a small proportion of middle and long branches but a large proportion of short branches. Trees of 3-year-old had a large proportion of long branches and small proportion of short branches compared to the 6, 9, 11 year groups,among which no differences were found in proportions of various branches. Total branch number of 3, 6, 9, 11-year old trees were 280 725, 877 800, 1 194 150, 1 104 375 per hm2. The yields of 3, 6, 9, 11-year old trees were 5 760,25 800, 56 220, 57 645 kg · hm-2. It showed that yield improved dramatically with the increase of age at the early stage of fruiting and maintained a stable level at maximum period of fruiting. Comprehensive analysis showed that tall-spindle shaped apple trees had the advantages of early fruiting, stable tree vigor at different ages and high yields.
