Abstract

Porous Si3N4 ceramics with excellent properties were successfully prepared by pressureless sintering using Lu2O3, Y203 and Al2O3 as sintering additives and pure β-Si3N4 powder as crystal seed.The influence of sintering aiddtives kind and β-Si3N4 phase contents on phase, microstructure and mechanical properties of porous Si3N4 ceramics was investigated.The results show that the resulting ceramic was composed of rod-like β-Si3N4 crystals with the length of 4.4-10.4 μm, average diameter of 0.6 μm and average aspect ratio of 6.87, when the contents of Lu2O3 and β-Si3N4 powder were 3 wt%and 5 wt% respectively, and the flexual strength was 330.7 MPa.As the content of β-Si3N4 powder increasing, the average aspect ratio increased to 7, and the porosity of porous Si3N4 ceramics reached 48%, which led to the decrease of flexual strength.
