Abstract
Objective To evaluate two ways of neonatal umbilical cord stump treatment: non-surgical method with spontaneous mummification and detachment of umbilical cord versus surgical removal. Methods A total of 448 neonates in our hospital from June 2009 to April 2010 were divided into the observation group (224 neonates) and control group (224 neonates) according to the oddness or evenness of their admission number. The observation group was offered non-surgical method,while the control group was offered surgical removal. Then a comparison was made in the terms of bleeding, exudate, infection and injury in the umbilical cord area, and the time of umbilical cord stump falling off. Results The incidence of bleeding in the umbilical cord area in the observation group ( 1.8％ ) was significantly lower than that in the control group (9.8％) (P ＜0.05 ). There was no statistic difference in incidence of exudate between the two groups ( P ＞ 0.05 ). The time of umbilical cord stump falling off in the observation group was (5.7 ± 2.7) d. Conclusion The non-surgical method was a safe and effective umbilical cord stump treatment. It can effectively reduce bleeding in the umbilical cord area caused by surgical removal, and help umbilical cord stump fall off earlier.关键词
