Abstract
Objective :To evaluate the use of palatal island flap(PTF) in reconstruction of retromolar defects resulting from ablative tumor resections.Methods: we have retrospectively reviewed 21 consecutive cases between May 2001 and August 2010 which palatal island flap(PIF) were used for the primary reconstruction of retromolar defects.The male: female ratio of the cases is 16 :5 The median age is 45 years ( range 24 - 74 years ), the benign: malignant ratio of neoplasm is 4:17.the defect area is from 3cm ×2cm to 5cm ×3cm.local PTF were performed on 21 patients.All cases began an oral diet between postoperative days 2 and 5 (mean 3.5 days).Results: 20 cases achieved to 1 -stage reconstruction;1 case achieved to a 2 -stage reconstruction, all patients were not found postoperative donor site complications.Each local PTF was as well as neighbouring and contralateral natural mucosa in layering、colour、elasticity、smoothness、texture、rubbing of chewing and stimulation of food..21cases in 6 months to 7 years long time' s follwing up.Conclusions: The PTF is easily harvested and offers a reliable method of primary reconstruction for limited lesions of the retromolar defects.关键词
