Abstract

In order to improve the leaching resistance of active ingredient-copper in ammoniacal copper quat-type D (ACQ-D) treated Chinese fir, microwave post treatments were carried out in this study. The percentages of copper leached out from ACQ-D treated Chinese fir with different microwave post-treatments were obtained by analyzing the copper retention in the treated wood after leaching tests. The copper fixation mechanism in the treated wood was determined with the help of the spectra of SEM and FTIR as well as the valence conversion of copper.The results showed that the percentage of copper leached out significantly reduced after microwave pest-treatments, and the leaching percentage decreased as the duration and the power of microwave post-treatments increased. Moreover, the leaching resistance of copper in the wrapped samples was better than that in the unwrapped ones, which was attributed to the combined effects of temperature and water content. Compared with the samples in air drying conditions, the valence conversion in the samples with microwave pest-treatments changed slightly, demonstrating that microwave post-treatments can't impair the natural decay resistance of ACQ-D treated wood. Spectra of SEM and FTIR showed that the crystal particles formed by the chemical reactions between copper and wood ingredients presented in cell wall and pits of wood. There was only small amount of copper reacted with cellulose, while lignin and hemicellulose were the major bonding sites for copper inside wood. In addition, the mechanical property experimental results showed that microwave post-treatments had slight effects on the compression strength parallel to grain and crystalline of ACQ-D treated Chinese fir.
