Abstract

Near stoichiometric Fe:Mg:LiNbO_3(Mg:Fe:LN) series crystals were grown by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method in LiNbO_3 (LN) melt with n(Li)/n(Nb) =1.38 doped with 0, 0.5% (in mole, the same below), 1 % and 2% MgO and 0.03% (in mass) Fe_2O_3, respectively. The infrared spectra, optical damage resistance and storage properties of Mg:Fe:LN crystals were measured. The results indicate that the OH~- absorption peak of Fe:2%Mg:LN crystal shifts to 3 535 cm~(-1), and the optical damage resistance is higher by three orders of magnitude than that of Fe:LN crystal. The sensitivity, the dynamic range and the optical damage resistance of Fe:0.5%Mg:LN crystal are 2.5 times, 2 times and one ordeT of magnitude higher than that of Fe:LN crystal, respectively. Using the Fe:0.5%Mg:LN crystal and Fe:LN crystal as storage medium respectively, the storage of 1 200 images is realized in one common volume. The storage quality of the Fe:0.5% Mg:LN crystal is preferable to Fe:LN crystal.
