Abstract

The lightning impulse tests for the high voltage (HV) winding of ultra-high voltage (UHV) transformers are characterized by a longer duration of the front time. The front time of lightning impulse voltage mainly affects the winding vertical insulation. The lightning impulse test with a longer duration of the front time may result in an inaccurate examination on the vertical insulation; however, the chopped impulse test can solve this problem.. In order to deal with the fact that the lightning impulse test with a longer duration of the front time can not check the lightning impulse characteristics under the standard duration of the front time, the chopped impulse test was put forward. The equivalent analysis on potential distribution and gradient voltage distribution under chopped impulse and full impulse was conducted based on a lower voltage impulse measurement example. It is suggested that the chopped impulse test can be taken as the replenish test for the full impulse test with a longer duration of the front time, so as to optimize the UHV transformer lightning impulse test sequence.
