Pilot study on removal of phthalate esters from drinking water using ozone-zeolite/activated carbon filler technique

Abstract
A pilot ozone/bio-activated carbon process was developed for removing trace phthalic acid esters(also known as phthalates,phthalate esters,PAEs) from a filter effluent of a municipal water treatment plant in which the Jialing River is served as water source.Four PAEs(dimethyl phthalate DMP,dibutyl phthalate DBP,di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate DEHP,dioctyl phthalate DOP) were selected as target pollutants.The result shows that the effective height of activated carbon media is 100 cm,the optimum operation parameters are as follows: the ozone dosage of 3 mg/L,the ozone contact time of 15 min,the empty bed contact time(EBCT) of activated carbon of 9 min.The process has better removal for the lower molecules weight PAEs than for the higher molecular weight PAEs.A two dosing locations experiment ahead and after the carbon adsorption unit shows that the different dosing ratios have little impact on the removal efficiency of phthalate esters.关键词
