Abstract

The Xiaoxi formation is one of the most important of late Mesozoic volcanic strata in the east of Fujuan Province, which is a major pyrophyl- lite-containing stratum. However, after Xiaoxi formation was formed, there are different opinions on it. Based on the systematic study of sections and geo- logical investigations on a scale 1:250 000 in four areas, including Zhouning county, it is considered that the Xiaoxi formation represents the early stage of early-Cretaceous terrestrial volcano-sedimentary rock series, which forms a complete sediment-eruption cycle. The magma is of basic, intermediate, inter-acidic and acidic property, which is unconformable on the Nanyuan formation and unconformably covered by the Shimaoshan Group. Moreover, this formation is divided into five lithologic segments from bottom to top based on stratum sequence, contact relationship, lithologic association characteristics, volcanic activity cycles and magma evolution. And it is ascertained that the strata is the early stage of early-Cretaceous through analysis to the data of strata contact retationship, hiome and isotope dating.
