Abstract

The equivalent bandwidth-the equivalent time length (∫eq-teq) separation technique is studied theoretically, which is used to identify the partial discharge {PD} pulses in virtue of the pulse clusters in the two-dimension- al Cartesian coordinate system. Moreover, the similar parameters, which are necessary for the PD pulses to make a compact cluster in foq-to~ plane, are calculated. Defective XLPE samples are used to model the different partial dis- charges of cables such as air gas discharge, corona discharge and surface discharge, and the PD pulses are mapped in ∫eq-teq plane. Morover, PD pulses coming from the same defect but different places of XLPE cable are mapped in an- other ∫eq-teq plane. The results show that pulses coming from different defects can form different clusters in feq-teq plane. Similarly, pulses from the same defect but different places can form different clusters in ∫eq-teq plane, also. Accordingly, ∫eq-teq identification technique is efficient for analyzing the defect types and PD sources of high voltage XLPE cables."
