Abstract
Objective To learn about the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis among elder people in the suburbs of Shanghai and to compare it with that of the urban areas of Shanghai. Methods A total of 3 343 elderly aged from 60 to 98 in Yongfeng community in the suburbs of Shanghai were investigated via both physical examinations and questionnaire. Results Incidence rates of knee osteoarthritis were significantly different between males and females ( P < 0. 01 ); also incidence rate of OA increased with age among the aged population ( P <0. 01 ) . Incidence rates of knee osteoarthritis diagnosed by clinical findings and by X - ray were significantly different ( P < 0. 01 ) . Both clinically diagnosed and X - ray diagnosed OA incidence rates among elder people were significantly different between the suburbs and the urban areas ( P <0. 01 ) . Conclusion The prevalence rate of knee osteoarthritis among elder people is higher in the suburbs than in the urban areas, higher in females than in males, and increases with age. Early interventions are needed especially in females living in the suburbs.关键词
