Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of B cell-specific MLV insertion site-1 (BMI-1) and its clinicopathologic significance in cervical cancer. Methods The expression of BMI-1 mRNA was detected by real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 30 cervical cancer samples and 10 normal cervical samples. The expression of BMI-1 protein was examined by SP immunohistochemistry in archival paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate the association between the clinicopathologic features and BMI-1 expression. Results Real time-PCR demonstrated that the BMI-1 mRNA levels in cervical cancer samples were significantly higher than those in normal cervical samples (P< 0.05). Immunohistochemical staining showed that BMI-1 protein was highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues than normal cervical tissue (P < 0.05). Expression of BMI-1 protein was highly correlated with the differentiation degree of tumor and lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). No significant difference of BMI-1 protein expression was found between cervical squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma (P > 0.05). Conclusion Overexpression of BMI-1 plays an important role in the oncogenesis and development of cervical cancer. Expression of BMI-1 protein was highly correlated with the differentiation degree of tumor and lymph node metastasis.
