Effects of colpocleisis on the symptoms and quality of life in elderly women with pelvic organ prolapse

Abstract
Objective: To observe the effects of colpocleisis on the symptoms and quality of life in elderly women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Methods:From October 2005 to February 2010,60 patients with severe POP stage ID and Ⅳ as classified with POP-Q system underwent total and partial colpocleisis. Patients completed the pelvic floor distress inventory short form (PFDI-20) and pelvic floor impact questionnaire short form (PFIQ-7) before the operation! And they were repeated 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year,respectively, after the operation. Results: Among the 60 patients, 56(93%), 53(88%) and 52(87%) patients filled the questionnaires 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the operation respectively. Mean PFDI-20 score was improved significantly from 76. 78± 40. 71 at baseline to 15. 73±10. 55 at 2 months, 11.11±8. 23 at 6 months and 11. 06±8. 20 at 1 year after the operation. Mean PFIQ-7 score was improved significantly from 82. 41 ± 32. 49 at baseline to 17. 88 ± 18. 12 at 2 months, 12. 93±14. 74 at 6 months, and 12. 77± 14. 64 at 1 year after the operation(P=0. 000). Conclusions: Colpocleisis can effectively resolve bothersome vaginal or pelvic and urinary symptoms among elderly women with severe POP and can significantly improve their quality of life.关键词
