Effect of Dietary Protein Levels on Growth Performance and Nutrient Digestion and Metabolism of Growing Blue Foxes (Alopex lagopus)

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein levels on growth performance, nutrient digestion and metabolism of growing blue foxes (Alopex lagopus). Ninety health male blue foxes with average body weight of (2. 31 ±0. 31) kg were randomly assigned into 6 treatments with 15 replicates per treatment and 1 fox per replicate. The blue foxes were fed experimental diets with protein levels of 24% (group I ), 26% (group II ) , 28% ( group III), 30% ( group IV ), 32% ( group V ) and 34% ( group VI), respectively. The experiment was 67 days (7 days for adaptation and 60 days for trial period). The results showed as follows; on the 45th day, the average body weight in groups IV, V and VI was significantly higher than that in other groups (P <0. 05); on the 60th day, the average body weight in group V was significantly higher than that in other groups (P <0.01). On the 31st to 45th day, the average daily gain weight in group V was significantly higher than that in other groups (P <0. 01); on the 46* to 60* day, the average daily gain weight in groups IV , V and VI was significantly higher than that in groups I , II and IE (P < 0.05). Compared with the groups I , II and HI, the DM digestibility in groups V and VI was significantly increased (P <0.01). The fat digestibility in group V was significantly higher than that in other groups (P < 0. 05 or P < 0. 01) , while the protein digestibility was not significantly difference among all groups (P > 0.05). The nitrogen intake and urine nitrogen in groups V and VI were significantly higher than those in other groups (P<0.01), while the fecal nitrogen, nitrogen output, net protein utilization and biological value of protein were not significantly difference among all groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, the appropriate dietary protein level for growing blue foxes is 32% , combined with parameters such as the average daily gain feed and nutrient digestibility.
