Abstract
Objective To evaluate the protective effect of depressing moderately the excessive portal pressure by means of splenic artery ligation and medication on hepatic functions and liver regeneration. Methods One hundred and eighty male Sprague - Dawley rats were divided into four groups: pure hepatectomy (PHx) group, spleen artery ligation (SAL) group, octreotide (OCT) group and prazosin (PRA) group. The incidence of liver failure, survival, liver histology, and pressure of the portal vein were observed in each 85% partially hepatectomized group. Results In treatment group, not only was the portal pressure moderately decreased but liver regeneration was promoted. Gradually increased mitotic figures were observed 24 hours after hepatectomy. There was significant difference between treatment group and pure partial hepatectomy group. Conclusions This is the first time that we have proved that moderate portal decompression not only mitigates liver injury, but also advances liver regeneration to regain valid liver cell population as early as possible to prevent lethal liver failure.关键词
