Effect of PEG induced drought stress on the germination indices of different varieties of Corchorus capsularis L.

摘要

Abstract

[Objective]The present experiment was conducted to screen the different varieties of Corchorus capsularis L. For drought resistance in germination period, and to establish the evaluation system of drought resistance. [Method]The seeds of eleven different varieties of Corchorus capsularis L. Were germinated in petri dishes under different concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25%) of polyethylene glycol (PEG6000). Seed germination indices, viz., relative germination rate (RGR), relative germination energy (REG), relative germination index (RGI), relative vigor index (RVI), relative radicle length (RRL), relative embryo length (REL), were determined. [Result]It was observed that RGR, REG, RGI, RVI, RRL and REL in seeds of all the varieties of Corchorus capsularis L. Decreased with the increasing concentration of PEG. However, low concentration of PEG (5%) promoted RRL in Corchorus capsularis L. Seeds, and 10-25% PEG concentration inhibited its REL Among the varieties of C. Capsularis, Yuan 09-30 and Yuan 09-35 recorded best RGR, while Yuan 3 showed the worst. Out of C. Olitorius varieties, Chang 09-41 and Chang 09-40 recorded best RGR, while Chang 09-1 showed the worst. [Conclusion]The concentrations of PEG ranging from 5-10% and 15-20% were found the best in terms of differentiating in varieties of C. Olitorius and C. Capsularis, respectively, for drought resistance during the germination period.
