Abstract
Objective: To examine the difference in levels of somatic symptoms between urban and rural patients with depression. Methods: The Somatic Symptoms Questionnaire and the Chinese version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were completed by a sample of 194 depression patients: 91 from urban areas and 103 from rural areas. Results: ①The most common somatic symptoms in urban patients were fatigue (94.5%), sleep problems (93.4%) and palpitation(78.0%). The most common symptoms in rural patients were fatigue(94.2%), sleep problems(91.3% ) and chest tightness (77.7%). The rural patients showed more dizziness and tinnitus. ②There were significant differences in the levels of somatic symptoms between urban and rural patients with depression. Those from the urban got lower scores than those from the rural. ③Multivariate analysis of variance showed that residency and educational levels had a significant interaction on somatic symptoms. In rural area patients, the severity of somatic symptoms in those with elementary or lower than elementary education were significantly higher than that of patients with college education. The level of somatic symptoms in patients with secondary education were significantly higher than patients with college education. Conclusion: The somatic symptoms in patients with depression have significant urban/rural differences; rural patients have higher levels of somatic symptoms.关键词
