Abstract

An organic-rectorite (OREC) was prepared with ionic liquid l-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C16mimBr). Two types of OREC/epoxy resin (EP) composites were obtained from the prepared OREC, with EP as a matrix, 2-ethyl-4- methylimidazole (2-E-4-MI) and tung oil anhydride (TOA) as curing agents, respectively. The microstructures, mechanical and thermal properties of the OREC/EP composites were characterized. The results indicate that the intercalated nanocomposite can be obtained when the curing agent 2-E-4-MI is added. The exfoliated nanocomposite can be obtained when the curing agent TOA is added at the OREC content of <2%(mass fraction, the same below). The OREC/EP nanocomposite with 2% of OREC showed the increased mechanical and thermal properties, compared to the neat system. The tensile strength was enhanced by 60.3%, the bending strength was increased by 26.7%, and the bending modulus was increased by 34%. The thermal decomposition temperature was increased by 14 ℃, and the glass transition temperature was increased by 5.5 ℃.
