Abstract

In order to get deeper understanding of the relationship between headloss development and back-washing in biological aerated filters (BAFs) , backwashing procedure which employed air washing, water washing and water rinse process was optimized in three BAFs with zeolite, ceramic particle and carbonate media respectively, and the recovery of headloss and treatment efficiency in biofilter after backwashing were also investigated based on the theoretical analysis. The results showed that the initial COD and SS concentration in effluent increased after backwashing but recovered in 2 hours. The ammonia nitrogen concentration in effluent almost did not change and recover quickly. All three BAFs have a promising treatment performance and operational stability after backwashing. The backwashing procedure of upflow BAF is suggested as follows; firstly, air washing 2 ~ 3 min with flow rate of 10 L/( m2 · S) , then air and water washing 3 ~ 5 min with both air and water flow rate of 10 L/(m2 · S) , finally, water rinse for 9 ~ 11 min with water flow rate of 10 L/( m2 · S).
