Abstract
Purpose To investigate the expression of hepatocyte growth factor( HGF ) in esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma( ESCC ) and its relationship to tumor angiogenesis. Methods The expression of HGF and CD34 in 64 specimens of ESCC and 20 cases of adjacent normal tissues were detected using immunohistochemmistry( IHC ). The microvessel density( MVD ) was calculated. Results Positive rate of HGF protein expression in ESCC was statistically higher than that of adjacent normal tissues ( 76. 6% vs 15. 0% ,P < 0.05 ). The expression of HGF was statistically correlated with tumor length, histological grade and lymph node metastasis ( P < 0. 05 ). The mean value of MVD in ESCC tissues was significantly higher than that of normal adjacent tissues, which were ( 38. 87 ± 17. 55 )/mm2 and ( 15. 10 ±3. 76 )/mm2 , respectively ( P <0. 05 ). ESCC with tumor length longer than 5 cm, lymph node metastasis and deeper invasion depth had a significantly higher MVD value( P <0. 05 ). The mean value of MVD in cases with positive HGF expression was ( 42. 25 ± 16. 50 )/mm2 , and was significantly higher than that of negative cases ( 27. 89 ± 16. 83 )/mm2 ( P < 0. 05 ). There was a significant correlation between value of MVD and expression of HGF. Conclusions Expression of HGF correlates with the malignant biological behaviour and angiogenesis of ESCC. HGF may become a potential target in treatment of ESCC.关键词
