Abstract

Static composting vessel with forced aeration was set to investigate the nitrogen transformation and maturity of night soil/municipal solid waste (MSW) co-composting with maize straw as amendments and lime as pH controller. Results showed: Nitrogen losses during composting were 26% ~ 49%, long thermophilic stage led to more nitrogen loss. Nitrogen losses rate at earlier stage increased by adding lime, but total losses did not increase for shortening composting period. Water soluble ammonia nitrogen climbed to summit 5.61 mg/gdw at earlier thermophilic stage , decreased to less than 0.34 mg/gdw till the end. Nitrate nitrogen increased to 1.84~4.05 mg/gdw, especially in temperature decreasing stage and maturity stage. NH4+-N/NO3--N ratio was less than 0.16 and water soluble carbon/total nitrogen ratio was less than 1.10,which could predict maturity of MSW and night soil co-composting.
