Abstract

In order to investigate the performance impact of the first turbine on a dual-turbine torque converter, a three-dimensional numerical simulation and analysis of the flow field in a dual-turbine torque converter was implemented with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using an unstructured grid, the sliding-mesh theory, and the non-steady-state solver. The conversion point from working to idling was accurately obtained, the idling speed of the first turbine was gained, and the calculation results were compared with the measured data to verify the accuracy of the numerical calculation. At the same time, the energy loss of the idling condition of the first turbine was analyzed to provide basis data for further optimization of the performance of the dual-turbine torque converter.
