Abstract

In order to remedy the problems of poor stability of radius retention and no targeted design for particular stratum during the manufacture of matrix-type PDC drilling bits, this research work designed 8 PDC bits by 4 kinds of radius retention methods . The radius retention performances of these drill bits were tested through field experiments. The mechanism of improvement of radius retention by hybrid grit sized diamonds was analyzed. The results showed that, PDC drilling bits manufactured with concentration 15 % coarse size diamond ( 20/30 ) and 10 % fine size diamond ( 50/60 ) as radius retention materials performed better wear resistance and free- cutting performances , which was superior to the case of using square PDC as radius retention material, especially in case of drilling in medium-hard and hard stratum , meanwhile the drilling efficiency was also increased.
