Action of hydrogen bond during moisture ageing and drying recovery of HTPB propellant

Abstract
The mechanism of moisture ageing and drying recovery of HTPB propellant was reviewed, and a study was made on how water affects hydrogen bond. Discussion of water moving law within the propellant containing moisture was conducted during the drying recovery. With cuboid HTPB propellant samples of 120 mm ×25 mm × 10 mm dimensions treated as the study object, moisture ageing tests were done to them under several temperatures and relative humidities ( RH). Cuboid samples that had been aged for 5 d at 30 t and RH = 100% treated as the study object, drying recovery tests with lid were done to them at 30 t. Some tensile tests were done after moisture ageing and drying recovery tests. Some high pixel photos were taken to the tensile break surface. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectrum analysis was done to some samples after moisture ageing tests. The results show that the hydrogen bonds in propellant matrix primarily change at the beginning of the moisture ageing,and the hydrogen bonds between propellant matrix and AP change in the evening of the moisture ageing. The change from the former to the latter needs the moisture absorption percent greater than some critical value. The increase of hydrogen bonds number causes the infrared character frequency to decrease.关键词
