Design and analysis of a coiling spring type retractable lunar regolith sampling arm

Abstract
Considering that the present lunar samplers cannot meet the requirements of power, size, weight and repeat-able, precise sampling at the same time, this paper presents a novel coiling spring type retractable lunar regolith sampling arm ( CSRA). The paper decribes the mechanics model of the CSRA. Then the finite element analysis is carried out to study the influence of its geometric parameters on the maximum pushing force on it, and a simplified mathematical model for calculation of the maximum pushing force is given. The comparison analysis shows that the calculation results obtained using the proposed simplified mathematical model well tally with those obtained from the finite element method. In addition, the arm is with an open cylindrical shell structure and driven by one motor only. The experimental results from a prototyped CSRA show the feasibility of the design.关键词
