Abstract

[Objective]In the present study, various characteristics of ten com varieties were comprehensively evaluated using grey correlation degree weighing method in order to provide references for evaluation of new crop varieties. [Method]Based on the multiple attribute decision making theory, the grey correlation degree was used to weigh different characteristics of ten corn varieties, viz., XQ-3, WD-6, Habao 7, HM-2, Lianyu 19, XQ-9, KYI 16, WD-37, HM-13 and Zhengda 619. The data was obtained from regional test trials of corn varieties conducted in Guangxi during 2008. [Result]The com variety HM-2 recorded highest comprehensive assessment value, followed by the variety Habao 7, while the variety XQ-9 recorded lowest value. The highest yield was recorded by the com variety HM-13, followed by Lianyu 19. The yield of com variety KYI 16 was found to be the lowest amongst all varieties. [Conclusion]In practice, evaluation of the new crop varieties should be carried out on the basis of those important characteristics which have interactive effects with yield and the environment. It was unscientific to evaluate the new crop varieties only on the basis of their yields. The grey correlation degree weighing method could reduce some subjective factors and make the breeding and evaluation of new crop varieties more scientific and targeted. This method could become a necessary tool for evaluating new crop varieties with very low-risks.
