Population Structure of Camellia pubipetala in Two Different Habitats

Abstract
[Objective] The purpose of the research was to explore the population structure and dynamics of an endangered species Camellia pubipetala in two different habitats. [ Methods ] By field investigation and ecological statistical analysis, the habitat characteristics, population structure and blooming case of Camellia pubipetala were studied and compared at two typical distribution areas - Fulong Town and Longhushan Nature Reserve of Cuangxi Province. [ Results] The Sterculia nobilis communities, where Fulong Camellia pubipetala population was located, were simply in structure, low in canopy density and frequent in disturbance, thus the vegetative growth of Camellia pubipetala population here has been restrained, the population was younger and its structure was simple. Nevertheless, with good reproductive growth and early blossoming age, the plants in shrub layer had a much higher blossoming rate and amount than Longhushan population. The Sterculia nobilis + Teonongia tonkinensis communities, where Longhushan Camellia pubipetala population was located, had a complicated structure and higher canopy density. The vegetative growth of this population was luxuriant, with more complicated and stable structure and higher age. However, the reproductive growth of the population was restrained and its blossoming age was later. The blossoming rate and amount of the plant in shrub layer was lower, but they would be increased when the plant grew into tree layer. With integrated and steady structure, both of the two populations could adapt to their habitats and dominate in shrub layer. Due to site condition, disturbance and other factors, young seedling individuals of the two populations were rare, and their self-renewing abilities were feeble. [ Conclusion ] Reasonable and integrated measures should be implemented to protect Camellia pubipetala populations in two habitats according to local conditions, so as to further promote the populations' sustainable development.关键词
