Abstract
News headlines designers deviate language at various levels to attract and impress readers. Among varieties of deviate categories in China Daily, register deviation is particularly striking. Based on Relevance Theory, this paper expounds register deviation in China Daily news headlines by case study from two perspectives: for designers, register deviation is the ostensive stimulus where designers' intention lies; for readers, their understanding of register deviation in China Daily news headlines is regarded as an ostensive-inferential process where readers try to find relevant information for reasonable interpretation by taking register deviation as osten-sion.关键词
