Modeling the effects of MODIS land cover data on summer heat wave over the Yangtze River Delta

Abstract
The Yangtze River Delta region is one of the most developed urban clusters in China, and this large-scale urbanization has modified land surface cover. To examine impacts of land cover data on the numerical simulation, this study used a mesoscale coupled model WRF/Noah/UCM and MODIS land cover data. The coupled model is used to investigate the impacts of land cover change, especially urban area expansion on the regional meteorological fields over the Yangtze River Delta during 25-27 July 2007. The results show that the use of MODIS land cover data has a significant impact on the heat wave event. When the land cover changed, the intensity and location of major temperature center increased. This result is close to observations. Hence the potential value of real-time land cover information for model initialization is substantial.关键词
