Abstract

In order to select the excellent seeds for the seedlings of Quercus phillyreaoides, the variation of seed morphology and weight of Quercus phillyreaoides from Mangdangshan mountain of Fujian Province was analyzed, based on the measurement of seeds length, breadth and weight from 2008 to 2009. The results indicated that there was biennial bearing of seeds production, so the seeds morphological characters and their weight had certain variation in different years. It was also found that the length and breadth of seeds showed significant linear relationship. In addition, the results of one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant differences in the length and breadth of seeds in different years. The data of variation coefficient (CV) and Gini coefficient about length, breadth and weight of seeds showed that CV was more sensitive than Gini, but the latter was more persuasive to explain the variation pattern of seeds. In conclusion, the seeds weight had more significant variation than length and breadth, and the Gini coefficient indicated that the variation of inner-plant was bigger than that of inter-plants because of heterogeneity of the environment.
