Abstract

The biosorption process has been studied extensively using microbial biomass as biosorbents for heavy metal removal in recent years. Biosorption of heavy metals by microbial cells has been recognized as a potential alternative to existing technologies for recovery of heavy metals from industrial waste streams. However, there are some problems about microorganism safety of and its low propagation speed, and this causes poor efficiency of its treatment. In this study, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains had been investigated for their ability to treat nickel-containing wastewater and was aimed to find the best way of treatment. The results showed that the method of bacterium-resuspension for treating nickel-containing wastewater was more prosperous than the direct-adsorption method. Its quantity of equilibrium accumulation reached 32.29 mg/g. Moreover, Bt strain in different growth stages (vegetative stage, sporulation stage and crystal stage) showed different adsorption capacity of Ni (II). The adsorption quantity of Bt vegetative cells was significantly higherthan the other two stages.
