Personality Characteristics and Mental Health of Patients with Schizophrenia of Primary Affection and Convalescent Stage

Abstract
Objective To explore the personality characteristics and mental health of patients with schizophrenia of primary affection and convalescent stage, as well as the correlation between the two, so as to provide the theoretical basis for further formulating a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. Methods The questionnaire of NEO - FFI designed by McCrae and Costa and assessment of mental health in comprehensive assessment of physical and mental health for Chinese were used to assess the personality characteristics and mental health of 79 schizophrenia patients in primary affection or convalescent period who were treated by new antipsychotics ( schizzy group ) and 169 healthy persons ( normal group ), and the correlation. Results For the personality characteristics in the schizzy group and normal group, the scores of neuroticism [ ( 3. 06 ±0. 55 ) vs. ( 2. 72 ±0. 54 ) ], extroversion [ ( 3. 01 ±0. 46 ) vs. ( 3. 29 ±0. 41 ) ], agreeableness [ ( 3. 27 ±0. 30 ) vs. ( 3. 50 ±0. 33 ) ], and responsibility [ ( 3. 20 ±0. 44 ) vs. ( 3. 45 ±0. 35 ) ] showed statistical differences ( P <0. 001 ); while the scores of openness [ ( 3. 13 ± 0. 40 ) vs. ( 3. 09 ±0. 37 ) ] showed no significant difference ( P > 0. 05 ). As for the mental health in the two groups, the scores of positive mood [ ( 1. 62 ± 0. 91 ) vs. ( 2. 27 ± 0. 69 ) ], cognitive function [ ( 1. 28 ± 0. 71 ) vs. ( 1. 10 ± 0. 63 ) ], and self - assessment [ ( 2. 19 ±0. 98 ) vs. ( 1. 67 ±0. 82 )] showed statistical differences ( P <0. 05 ); while the scores of negative mood [ ( 1. 34 ±0. 86 ) vs. ( 1. 18 ±0. 72 )] and behavior problems [ ( 0. 99 ±0. 54 ) vs. ( 0. 94 ±0. 48 ) ] showed no significant difference ( P >0. 05 ). There was a close correlation between the personality characteristics and mental health in the schizzy group, the neuroticism was positively correlated with the negative mood, behavior problems and self - assessment ( P < 0. 001 ) and the extroversion was positively correlated with the positive mood ( P <0. 05 ). Conclusion In formulating comprehensive re-habilitation plan for patients with schizophrenia of primary affection and convalescent stage, great attention must be paid to their personality characteristics and mental health, so as to reduce the affection of some special traits of personality characteristics to mental health.关键词
