Abstract

Thermodynamic analysis of the methanol to propylene( MTP) process based on ZSM-5 catalysts has been carried out. For each reaction, enthalpy change, Gibbs free energy change and equilibrium constant at varying temperatures were presented. The thermodynamic equilibrium between C2.6 alkenes was analyzed by the method of minimum Gibbs free energy. The results indicated that alkene methylation is exothermic whereas alkene cracking is endothermic; one mole of methanol releases about 30 kJ heat when converted to propylene; alkene methylation is virtually irreversible but alkene cracking is limited by thermodynamic equilibrium. For each methanol partial pressure in MTP, there always exists an optimum temperature at which the propylene content is maximal among the final equilibrium compositions of C2.6 olefins. The maximum propylene mass fraction is close to 40% (w). Higher propylene equilibrium composition can be obtained by using small pore molecular sieves as the catalyst.
