Abstract

The nylon bag method was used to study the dynamic effect of the application of six tropical leguminous green manures on the exchangeable base cations of latosol. The results showed that the incorporation of the green manures increased soil exchangeable base cations (Na+ wasn't significant), suggesting that the green manures increased soil fertility and buffering capacity to acid. The greater increase in soil exchangeable base cations was observed during the initial 60 days after the application of green manures (exchangeable K* at 30 days), and then the soil exchangeable base cations decreased gradually to near the status of exchangeable base cations in the control treatment. The ratios of Ca/K, Ca/Mg and (Ca+Mg) /SEB for the treatment with Desmodium veliuinum (Willd.) DC. Prodr and Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi in Bull added were significantly higher than that for the control, but the ratio of K/SEB was lower than the control, illustrating that the biggest effects of green manures on soil exchangeable Ca2+ occurred. The correlation analysis showed that soil exchangeable Ca, Mg, K and SEB were significantly correlated with each other, but they were not correlated with exchangeable Na and the total amount of exchangeable Ca, Mg, K significantly.
