Visualisation of zebrafish infection with GFP-labelled Edwardsiella tarda

Abstract
Objective To establish a zebrafish model of Edwardsiella tarda infection to study the pathogenicity and possible route of infection. Methods The infection process and histopathology were visualized in the zebrafish infected by E. Tarda labelled with green fluorescent protein. Results Histopathological observation revealed hydropic degeneration, atrophy and necrosis of liver cells, scattered hyperplastic nodules, congestion, edema and loss of lymphocytes in the spleen. The gastrointestinal tract was the first site where the pathogen was detected, followed by gill and skin. Conclusions Zebrafish can be used as an animal model for studying the pathogenicity of E. Tarda infection. The results of our study provide evidence that intestine, gill and skin may be the main route of infection by E. Tarda.关键词
