Abstract

By using 3 mm thick titanium TA2 and 26 mm thick normalized steel Q345R, explosive welding experiments were performed, and the dynamic parameters were studied. In light of the characters of bonding area of the clad plate, bond strength (shear strength) and the metallurgical structures of interface waves, the conditions responsible for high bond strength and more regular interface wave morphology were discussed. For 3 mm thick titanium TA2 and 26 mm thick normalized steel Q345R, the condition is the dynamical bend angle β> 17°, and dynamical impact velocity νp > 760 m/s. The mechanism responsible for interface waves was discussed according to the metallurgical structures of interface waves and the striation of the base plate. The conclusion is that the jet prevents the clad plate from continuously impacting the base plate, which is one of the main reasons why the interface wave is always observed.
