Abstract

In order to resolve the limitation of test standard IEC 61000-4-2,three different electrostatic discharge(ESD) generators of which discharge currents meet the requirements of IEC 61000-4-2 are chosen to test the immunity.Both the produced electric field and magnetic field are measured at different distances during the discharge.The experimental results show that good repeatability of generator can be obtained under well controlled test conditions.The electromagnetic fields produced by different generators are distinct nearby the discharge point,but the consistencies are improved by increasing the measurement distance.On the test platform,the magnetic field intensity decreases monotonically as the distance from the discharge point increases.However,the behavior of electric field is quite different,the amplitude first decreases but increases at edges.Moreover,the electromagnetic fields change drastically within about 20 cm,but vary much more slowly when the distance from the discharge point is longer than 40 cm.As a result,the revised standard should define the electromagnetic field during the discharge;increasing the distance between discharge point and equipment under test(EUT) can improve the consistency of immunity test results.
